Abstract
The thrust toward elimination of ' CFC's has created a need for new solder pastes which do not require solvent cleaning. Water soluble and low residue pastes are new alternatives; maintaining the status quo and not cleaning the residue is another alternative. This paper will focus on the latter two options: eliminating the cleaning step in the SMT assembly process using either low-residue or rosin solder pastes. Seventeen solder pastes, and two rework fluxes were evaluated on a 100 % SMT SIMM memory card, in an effort to change the existing pastes and fluxes used in production with noclean pastes and fluxes. Two candidates were chosen as suitable and are currently in the process of being introduced in the Toronto manufacturing facility, This paper summarizes the evaluations performed in introducing a no-clean paste and no-clean flux into the manufacturing process, and the associated process changes required. The existing assembly process for the SIMM card is a double sided SMT double IR pass process, with one cleaning step aner the final IR reflow. The raw card used for this assembly has exposed copper pads, and the component set on this card includes SOJ modules, 1206 resistors, and 1210 capacitors.
