Abstract
n the first half of the 1980s, Texans joked that the construction crane should replace the mockingbird as the official state bird. Throughout the state, the construction boom made the steel-necked crane a more common sight than the state bird. In the mid-1980s, however, the construction crane virtually disappeared from the Texas land-scape as building activity declined dramatically. While this boom and bust in the Texas construc-tion sector is well-known, its causes and effects are less well understood.
