After the fire was extinguished, crewmembers who remained on board had to live and work within the smoke damaged submarine during the 5-day journey back to Faslane, Scotland. The crew of HMCS CHICOUTIMI experienced toxic chemical exposures as a result of the fire, and so it is important to a) understand the nature of those exposures, and b) consider the possible long-term health consequences of such exposures. The purpose of this report is to explore these issues, utilizing information that is specific to the HMCS CHICOUTIMI fire incident, as well as general information from the medical and scientific literature. Hazardous Chemicals and Smoke Exposure The potential for a hazardous chemical to cause harm is based on the fundamental principle of dose-response: the greater the amount, or dose, of exposure to a hazardous chemical, the greater the risk and/or severity of harm.
