Abstract
SIMILAR SPECIES: H. umbellate may be distinguished from other Ohio species of Hydrocotyle by its peltate leaf blades and simple, many-flowered umbels. TOTAL RANGE: Nova Scotia to MN, s. to FL and TX, pacific coast and trop. America. STATE RANGE (as of 2008): There are post-1980 records from Geauga and Portage counties. Pre-1980 records exist from Ashtabula, Lake, and Stark counties. HABITAT: Open to semi-open situations on pond-shores, ditches, and wet meadows. HAZARDS: Alteration of the wetland habitat, shoreline development; and possibly overshading by woody species as a result of succession. RECOVERY POTENTIAL: Presumed poor. The extant Ohio populations are restricted to margins of glacial kettlehole lakes. INVENTORY GUIDELINES: Mature flowering or fruiting material is needed for positive identification; avoid over-collecting. COMMENTS: This species may be slightly more frequent in northeastern Ohio than current records indicate. It could be overlooked due to the difficulty of collecting it in its wetland habitat. It should be sought on the margins of natural lakes.
