Abstract
• The economy continues to grow moderately with some sectors of the economy performing very well while others are performing less well. • However, higher commodity prices have put additional pressures other domestic sectors such as manufacturing by increasing input costs and reducing international competitiveness through the rising exchange rate. There are risks of further price pressures from commodities. • There are high rates of investment which will increase the potential output of the economy and alleviate some of the bottlenecks currently hampering expansions in output. • Economic growth is likely to remain below economic growth rates of previous years (in particular 1994 to 2004) for some time. • Employment growth has been good though there still remains a significant amount of unemployment and underemployment. • Housing prices and consumption are not increasing quickly in many markets. • Business profit growth was largely driven by significant increases in the mining and finance industry and is being artificially increased by the trend to incorporation. • Inflation rose significantly in June quarter 2006, but excluding these volatile items underlying inflation is not increasing as quickly. The RBA is likely to increase interest rates in the near future. • The exchange rate is currently at fairly high levels, and there are risks to the economy if there is significant appreciation or depreciation. The current account deficit is at high levels. This may cause the exchange rate to fall or constrain future growth. 7.1 ECONOMIC GROWTH 7.1 The economy grew by 0.6 percent in the March 2006 quarter, and by 2.8 percent over the year to March. The figures show growth continues to be only modest and is well below economic growth rates of previous years, in particular from 1994 to 2004.
