Abstract
David C. Gooding, respected scholar, colleague, and friend of many in the STS community, died on 13 December 2009. In 2002 he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and he started treatment in 2004. He under-went several courses of chemotherapy, but in 2008 the disease became more aggressive. In 2009 he had an stem cell transplant, which was unsuccessful. David was born in the British Military Zone in Germany in 1947 and later moved with his family to Vancouver. I was next to David on a harbor tour when he described passing under the bridge and seeing Vancouver for the first time at the age of seven. He received a BA in Philosophy (First Class Honors) from Dalhousie University in 1970, an MA in Philosophy from Dalhousie University in 1971, and a DPhil in Lit. Hum. (Oxon.) in 1976 with a thesis on ‘Faraday and the Power of Matter’. Faraday remained a topic of study for most of his academic life. His first daughter Kate was born in 1981 and his second daughter
