Abstract
The biorefinery concept offers a unique opportunity to build on Alberta‟s strengths. It provides the chance to improve the lot of rural, resource-dependent communities by creating an alternative, value-added destination for agricultural and forest biomass. It has the potential to add valuable new export products to the trade balance, diversifying and strengthening Alberta‟s economy. Finally, it will help Alberta reach the targets set by the Kyoto Protocol in a fashion that creates new opportunities, rather than attacking and penalizing the existing provincial economy. The generation of combinations of power, fuel and products through the careful manipulation of biomass is an idea that has only recently begun to see commercialization around the world. As in petroleum refineries, a huge number of products and services will eventually be derived from the biorefinery. These products can be expected to change and evolve as the biorefinery concept is developed by science and technology and exploited by markets.
