Abstract

This study was conducted over a six month period in a Grade 7/8 classroom in a predominantly white school in a middle class suburb in Kingston, Ontario. It focuses specifically on how females interact with their male peers, their female classroom teacher and Equal for Girls 2 several female researchers when computers are introduced to the classroom environment. Through weekly observations, it became apparent that girls had a tendency to opt out of computer use during classroom "free time." Through a series of interviews with male and female students, tabulations of "free time" computer use over a 7 month period, and field observations by myself and the three other researchers, I was able to discern how classroom dynamics, computer software and teacher intervention affected the ways in which girls interacted with computers.
