Abstract
This article reports on a needs assessment/ evaluation study of the Health Bus, a mobile healthcare unit. This innovative outreach pro-gram provides healthcare services to the poor in downtown Toronto, a large Canadian city. It has no fancy diagnostic facilities—only a few basics like blood pressure machines and thermometers —and is staffed by nurses. Particular focus is on the clients ’ perspectives about these services and how they can be improved. Implications for nurses and other healthcare service providers with regard to approaches to care and advocacy, as well as healthcare policies and political action, are discussed. Since the cutbacks of social programs in the 1990s, homelessness and poverty in Canadian cit-ies have become rampant.
