Abstract
Parks Canada has reviewed the draft Terms of Reference for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and the draft work plan for the Environmental Impact Review of the proposed DeBeers Canada Gahcho Kue diamond mine project. Parks Canada has no comments on the draft work plan and has the following recommendations for the draft Terms of Reference for the EIS. 1. Section 5.0 pg 25- Subjects of Note- Reference is made to the “Proposed Thaydene National Park”. This park is yet to be established and because a name has not been determined we would prefer that the reference be to the “Preliminary Area of Interest for a proposed national park in the East Arm of Great Slave Lake”. 2. Section 5.14 – We recommend the wording of this section be altered as follows for clarity and consistency. 5.14 Proposed National Park The proposed development is upstream of a proposed National Park around the East Arm of Great Slave Lake. A memorandum of understanding between the Lutsel K’e Dene First Nation and Parks Canada indicates that the proposed development would be in close proximity to Park’s Canada’s initial preliminary area of interest for the park.
