Abstract
ABSTRACT-In a French case-control study of 1,010 breast cancer cases and 1,950 controls with nonmalignant diseases, the risk of breast cancer was found to be positively associated with frequency of cheese consumption and the level of fat in the milk consumed. A negative association was found between frequency of yogurt consumption and the risk of breast cancer. No associa-tion was found between the consumption of butter and the risk of breast cancer. The positive association between a daily consump-tion of alcohol and the risk of breast cancer previously reported was not altered when dairy produce consumption was taken into account.-JNCI 1986; 77:633-636. At the present time, the role of dietary factors in the etiology of breast cancer is not well understood, and it is difficult to suggest specific dietary recommendations (1). Animal experiments (2, 3) and geographical correlation studies (4-6) have shown that a high-fat diet increases the occurrence of this cancer, but individual human stud-ies reported contradictory results. For example, some studies (7, 8) found a positive association between breast cancer risk and height, weight, or overweight index, which indirectly reflects diet, but other studies (9, 10) did not. Among the studies that considered diet directly, a positive association between breast cancer risk and total fat intake was reported in Canada (11); but no association was observed in Hawaii (12) and in the United States (13). In the two studies that considered separately a variety of high-fat food items (14, 15), posi-tive associations were found between consumption of some, but not all, items and breast cancer risk. We wondered whether the varying results previously observed in the case-control studies might be explained by interaction between dietary factors and alcohol con-sumption, since the latter has been recently found to be associated with the risk of breast cancer (16-18). We report here the results of a case-control study that ana-lyzed the role of both alcohol consumption and dietary factors on breast cancer risk.
