Abstract
Abstract 22 We describe the characteristics of Alberta patients infected or colonized with carbapenemase-23 producing Gram negative bacteria during 2010-13 that linked to recent travel outside of Canada. 24 Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by broth micro-dilution, and isolates were 25 characterized using PCR, sequencing and multi-locus sequencing typing. A broth mating study 26 was used to assess the transferability of resistance plasmids which were subsequently 27 characterized. All the patients (n=12) included in our study had contact with a healthcare system 28 while abroad; the majority presented with UTIs, were admitted to hospitals within weeks after 29 their return to Alberta and secondary spread occurred in 1 case resulting in the death of another 30
