Abstract
This paper examines the disposi-tion of powerlessness in the commem-oration process. By reviewing the his-tory of the national commemoration of aboriginal people in Canada’s North, it becomes possible to see who have been left out of the national identity and who have been conscripted to fill needed roles in the national self-image. It also follows the fortunes of northern aboriginal people as they take action to regain control of their past, and explains how they are work-ing at achieving national acceptance on their own terms. The paper also reflects upon how Canadians were able to accept this social injustice and are only now slowly recognizing changes to the national identity.
