The current paper draws from social network analysis and diffusion theory to study the case of a mortgage fraud that spread undetected for five years in British Columbia Canada, defrauding 2,285 investors for a total of $240 million dollars. The diffusion is studied from the point of view of victims who unknowingly invested in the fraudulent scheme. The successful diffusion of an investment opportunity like the one offered by ERON depends on 1) how much the principals are able to convince victims to spread the word about the opportunity, and 2) how much they are willing to invest their time in personally recruiting investors. The results show that the fraud appeared to follow the classic logistic diffusion curve. Although a few key players were responsible for the spread, including Eron principals, the results show that the fraud successfully spread among victims, many recruiting others to maintain the diffusion over a period of five years.
