We examine the dividend policy of a sample of companies from eight emerging markets, and compare them to a sample of 99 companies from the US. The comparison is motivated by the observation that much of the financial theory on which our knowledge of dividend policy is based comes from a capital market perspective. This perspective assumes arms length financing and generates dividend policy implications from models of signaling and information asymmetries. In contrast, emerging markets are usually more bank oriented and closely held. Overall, our results indicate that emerging market firms exhibit similar dividend behaviour to firms in the US. This result is paradoxical and contrary to our expectations.
