Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the competitive position of the Alberta dairy industry relative to competing regions and relative to its future revenue base. The objectives of the study were: • To determine the cost competitiveness in the dairy farm segment of Alberta relative to competing regions; • To determine the cost competitiveness in dairy processing of Alberta relative to competing regions; • To assess Alberta cost competitiveness relative to specific milk price/revenue alternatives. To do so, the following was undertaken: • Models of 250 cow and 500 cow dairy farm facilities were constructed. These were populated with input price data from Alberta and from competing regions, with comparisons made on the basis of unit cost. • Models of processing facilities (a fluid bottling operation and a butter-powder plant) were developed.
