Abstract
Dear Sir: The report ofthe workshop on this topic (1) underlined how little is known of the extent of the prejudicial effects of mild-to-moderate malnutrition on physical working capacity, im-munobiological competence, and cognitive functions and be-havior. The issue concerns perhaps a quarter to a third of young and older children in developing populations who constitute three quarters ofthe world’s total population. Living and working injuxtaposition with populations at risk, we are perhaps made more immediately aware ofthe problem, namely, when is slower growth or thinness noxious? How much is due to nutritional privation and to nonnutritional causes? Are slower growers really marked by lower physical en-ergy, greater proneness to infections, and lower places in school examinations? Our own investigations have primarily con-
