Abstract
The Paleochristian architectural heritage of Eastern Algeria represents a historical and cultural wealth that this doctoral thesis aims to explore. This region, which once hosted the headquarters of the Third Augustan Legion in Africa, deserves special attention. The main objective is to highlight the uniqueness of this heritage while examining the complex challenges related to its preservation in the contemporary context.Algeria, heir to a Christian past dating back to the 1st century CE, possesses an architectural treasure of inestimable value, often neglected. The remains of Christian monuments and complexes, which testify to the peak of Christianity in the 4th century, are now facing various threats resulting from urban, economic, social, and climatic pressures.The research will focus on emblematic sites such as the Roman Christian basilica of Theveste in Tébessa, the Christian quarter of Hippo in Annaba, the episcopal complex of Cuicul in Djemila, and the Christian basilica of Thamugadi in Timgad. Through an in-depth analysis of these monuments, this study aims to establish a detailed monograph of Paleochristian architecture in Algeria and to map the progression of Christianity in the region through its architectural expression.An innovative aspect of this research lies in the use of virtual reconstruction technologies. This methodology is not limited to a simple visual representation; it constitutes a genuine tool for the conservation and transmission of heritage. Indeed, virtual reconstruction allows not only to document the current state of the monuments but also to compare them with data from previous research, thus offering a diachronic perspective on their evolution and degradation.This approach of digitization and 3D modeling is part of a dynamic heritage preservation logic. It allows for the creation of an evolving database capable of integrating new information as discoveries and interventions occur. This digital resource can serve as a reference for researchers as well as cultural and educational institutions, both in Algeria and internationally, compensating for the lack of comprehensive archives in the country.Furthermore, this study aims to raise awareness about the urgency of protecting this heritage in the face of sometimes obsolete legislative frameworks and insufficient application of existing laws. The research thus hopes to stimulate renewed interest in the preservation and valorization of Algeria's Paleochristian heritage, ensuring its transmission to future generations.In conclusion, this thesis aims not only to deepen the knowledge of Paleochristian architecture in Algeria but also to demonstrate how virtual reconstruction technologies can play a crucial role in the conservation and dissemination of architectural heritage. In doing so, it hopes to contribute to the development of new preservation strategies adapted to the challenges of the 21st century.
