February 2003 PIP News Update Diabetes Outcomes Payment

Abstract
The Diabetes outcomes payment, which is the final component of the Diabetes initiative, will be paid in May 2003. Practices where at least 20 percent of their patients have been provided with an annual cycle of care for diabetes will receive $5 per quarter per patient with diabetes (SWPE). The coverage rate will increase over time to encourage increased levels of care for patients with diabetes. Practices with 20 percent coverage or better will be eligible for an outcomes payment, providing the practice meets the minimum threshold for diabetes detection. You will be advised of the threshold in the May 2003 News Update. Services rendered during 1 January to 31 December 2002 (standard PIP reference period) will be included in the calculations for the first outcomes payment in May 2003. All services rendered after this period will be included in subsequent quarterly payments. Further details will be sent to practices that are signed on for the Diabetes Incentive in the near future.
