Abstract
Newly available information justifies reconsideration of an earlier request to the Texas Historical Commission to modify the Mount Bonnell name attribution found on the marker installed on the site in 1969. The issue is summarized in the current entry for George Bonnell found in the Handbook of Texas Online: “Some sources credit George Bonnell as the namesake for Mount Bonnell on the Colorado River and that Gen. Edward Burleson may have named the mountain in 1838, but other historians have also speculated that the Travis County landmark may have been named for army officer Joseph Bonnell by Albert Sidney Johnston.”1 Information principally gathered from undocumented sources in 1969 led to the
