This paper explores the relationship between the network positions of firms within an industrial cluster and radical innovation. Our emphasis in this paper differs from much of the previous work on clusters in that we adopt a systematic social network analysis approach that allows us to construct sociometric variables measuring the network positions of firms within the Quebec optics and photonics cluster. The following three network measures are used in this paper: degree, betweenness and effective size. Degree and betweenness were developed by Freeman (1977, 1979), while effective size was created by Burt (1992). These network measures are used to assess whether or not network positions matter with regard to radical innovation within a small industrial cluster. The results show that degree and effective size are positively correlated with radical innovation. However, the results show no significant correlation between radicalness of innovation and betweenness.
