Abstract
Botswana is one of a very few countries in the contemporary era that has sustained rapid economic growth over an extended period. It is virtually the only African country to be listed among the rapid growers. Botswana’s record in human development is equally impressive. Major emphasis has been placed on providing basic education and primary health care throughout the country. The rapid growth of GDP per capita has not brought about a deterioration of the relative income distribution. This paper reviews the breadth and depth of the record, and then addresses the question: Why did per capita GDP grow so rapidly? The answer is straightforward: Most of the economic policies conform to modern economic orthodoxy.
