Abstract

1 The thesis corresponds to 20 weeks of full-time work for each of the authors. The need for negotiating Service Level Agreement contracts in Web Services and Virtual Organisations is there to establish trust in an otherwise untrustworthy business environment. The TrustCoM project aims to develop a framework that among other functions assists in the creation and management of such contracts in the context of Virtual Organizations as well as the trust and security issues that may arise. TrustCoM has not resolved the issue of which negotiation protocol to use in order to negotiate this type of contract. It is to this end that this thesis studies existing negotiation protocols and decides which one is suitable for the framework, suitability in terms of functionality and security. The Montreal Taxonomy, a taxonomy for classifying negotiation protocols, was applied to several existing protocols. From the studies, none of the protocols suited the requirements so this thesis suggests detailed modifications to an existing negotiation protocol.
