Ice Stress Measurements from Land-fast Ice along Canada's Labrador coast.

Abstract
Ice stress data recovered using mercury filled sensors from two land-fast ice sites off the coast of Labrador are presented. Difficulties associated with installation and the solution adopted are described. The stress data are analyzed with respect to wind and ice temperature data obtained for the area and correlations presented. The response of the principal stress was 0.3 kPa for each 1 m/s of wind forcing and 0.6 kPa for each 1oC of temperature change. Efficient navigation along the Canadian east coast is limited by insufficient information on the mobile pack ice which infests the area in the late winter and early spring. Of primary concern is the ice pressure, or more precisely ice stress, which reduces the maneuverability of ships and increases the risk of damage.
