Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the ways in which the structure of the Canadian feder-ation shapes the fiscal realities faced by local governments in Canada. Emphasis is placed on how the federal system affects the taxation power and expenditure responsibilities of local governments, and the various types of intergovernmental granting schemes that are in operation or have been proposed. Recent interest in greater involvement by the national government in municipal finance has yet to develop into new policy arrangements. Some comments the potential forms of this involvement are offered.
