Dès le xii e siècle, on voit apparaître des traductions des textes liturgiques et des paraphrases de la Bible qui deviendront rapidement des traductions complètes dont nous connaissons aujourd’hui plusieurs versions, souvent préservées dans plus d’un manuscrit. L’exploration des choix de traduction et des interprétations qui en découlent, à partir de cet ensemble de traductions françaises produites entre le xii e et le xiv e siècle, permet de jeter un éclairage particulier sur la façon de penser la tentation dans notre univers linguistique, tout en lui donnant une certaine profondeur historique. Les plus anciennes traductions de la Bible en français reconduisent ainsi l’idée que la tentation est d’abord une mise à l’épreuve des fils par le père. Réversible dans l’Ancien Testament, elle devient plus spécialement l’oeuvre de Satan, l’Adversaire, dans le Nouveau. Dans tous les cas, elle est associée à l’énonciation de la Loi. Dès lors, dans la mise à l’épreuve du désir, il est moins question de femmes tentatrices que du Tentateur singulier, en lien direct avec le nom du Père à qui le chrétien implore quotidiennement de ne pas le soumettre à la tentation.
