Abstract
Abstract This chapter shifts focus to the occult revival in Imperial Germany and examines the emergence of the Ordo Templi Orientis, Rudolf Steiner, and the German Theosophical Society. The Ordo Templi Orientis began as a confederation of masonic rites compiled by four German freemasons: Carl Kellner, Theodor Reuss, Harry Klein, and Franz Hartmann. Alongside Theosophy, this organization placed special emphasis on the fusion of science and spirituality and piggybacked off the Lebensreform and Volkish milieus. Rudolf Steiner evolved from noted Goethe scholar to general secretary of the German Theosophical Society and a leading European occultist. Attention is given to the role of John Yarker and the Rite of Memphis Misraim in the development of the Ordo Templi Orientis. The chapter concludes with an examination of Steiner’s unique theosophical ideas.
