Abstract
Abstract When Bishop Tikhon arrived in North America in 1898, his new diocese was undergoing a tremendous change from its old concentration in Alaska to a new influx of immigrants settling in the eastern United States. The greatest number were Greek Catholics who converted to Orthodoxy after coming to North America. From his base in San Francisco, Bishop Tikhon spent half of every year on the road to the eastern United States, to Canada, and to Alaska. In building up the diocese, he oversaw the construction of new cathedrals for New York and Chicago. He realized that the diocese was far too large for one bishop to administer effectively, and he pressured the Holy Synod in St. Petersburg to grant him an assistant bishop for Alaska so that he could concentrate his efforts on the mainland.
