Abstract
Pensatore sempre controcorrente, nella sua opera Claude Lefort ha proposto un metodo di interrogazione dell’enigma del sociale. La sua eredità, senza mai dar vita a una scuola, ha influenzato profondamente pensatori politici della democrazia di orientamenti diversi, ispirando tanto teorie della democrazia radicale, quanto tentativi di riformare la social-democrazia. L’intera opera dell’autore francese è infatti segnata dal tentativo di comprendere la società democratica contemporanea, le sue origini e il suo significato in quanto istituzione e dimensione simbolica auto-riflessiva. Perciò questo volume pone come perno dell’opera del filosofo francese non il totalitarismo, ma la democrazia. Per Lefort, la democrazia è la società del conflitto e della perdita dei punti di riferimento certi, in cui il luogo del potere appare vuoto. All’interno di essa si muove però continuamente un impulso verso la totalità e il recupero del fondamento, che, chiudendo l’interrogazione, conduce al totalitarismo. I diversi contributi del volume analizzano le componenti che hanno nutrito il pensiero del filosofo francese: la matrice fenomenologica, i modelli socio-etno-antropologici e il marxismo non ortodosso. Vengono esaminati i dialoghi che Lefort ha intrecciato con Arendt, Tocqueville e La Boétie e, infine, le tensioni che animano la sua interrogazione della modernità.
