Contexte : Depuis 1962, la communauté de Grassy Narrows est exposée au méthylmercure (MeHg) par la consommation de poissons contaminés issus de rejets industriels en Ontario. Le mercure affecte le cerveau et le champ visuel, impliquant possiblement une atteinte rétinienne. L’étude Niibin, menée avec la communauté, a évalué la santé oculovisuelle des individus exposés, dont l’architecture rétinienne à l’aide de la tomographie par cohérence optique (OCT). Objectif : Évaluer l’association entre l’exposition au MeHg et l’architecture rétinienne des individus exposés à différentes périodes (prénatale, récente, passée). Méthodes : Une série d’analyses statistiques descriptives et de modèles linéaires et longitudinaux à effets mixtes ont permis d’évaluer les associations au Hg, selon le type d’exposition, et l’épaisseur de la rétine interne de la macula (GC-IPL) et entourant le nerf optique (RNFL). Résultats : Une concentration plus élevée de Hg dans le sang du cordon ombilical (n = 59, âge médian = 41) était associée à un amincissement du GC-IPL dans tous les quadrants. Une augmentation des concentrations capillaires de Hg à long terme était aussi liée à un amincissement du GC-IPL (n = 26, âge médian = 56,5). Une association plus faible a été observée entre le sang du cordon ombilical et l’amincissement du RNFL. Aucune relation n’a été détectée avec les niveaux sanguins actuels (n = 118, âge médian = 46). Conclusion : Les expositions prénatale et passée au Hg sont associées à un amincissement rétinien à l’âge adulte, soulignant l’importance du dépistage OCT et de la surveillance de la santé oculovisuelle chez les populations autochtones concernées.
