La maltraitance à l’enfance est associée à des performances cognitives plus faibles et à un risque plus élevé de démence. Cependant, la plupart des études sont transversales, se sont concentrées sur des types spécifiques de maltraitance et les différences individuelles ont rarement été examinées. Objectifs: 1) Évaluer si la maltraitance à l’enfance prédit une performance cognitive plus faible ainsi qu’un déclin cognitif plus grand chez des adultes souffrant de maladies chroniques 2) Examiner si ces relations diffèrent selon le sexe et/ou la présence de maladies coronariennes. Méthodes: 1254 adultes avec maladies chroniques (39,6% femmes; 65,56±6,97 ans) ont complété le Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Le Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) a été administré lors de deux visites à 5 ans d’intervalle. Les analyses principales incluaient régressions et analyses de modération. Résultats: La maltraitance a été vécue par 32% de l’échantillon et un trouble cognitif léger a été retrouvé chez 32,7% des participants au temps 1 et 40,2% au temps 2. La maltraitance était associée à des scores de MoCA significativement plus faibles au temps 1 (b =-0,013, p=0,020), mais elle n’était pas associée à un déclin de ces scores (b=-0,002, p=0,796). Les MoCAs différaient selon le sexe et la présence de maladies coronariennes, mais ces derniers n’ont pas influencé les relations étudiées. Conclusion: La maltraitance a été associée à des performances cognitives plus faibles chez des adultes plus âgés souffrant de maladies chroniques, mais elle n’était pas significativement associée à un déclin cognitif durant le suivi. Les mécanismes impliqués doivent être davantage étudiés.
