Les caractéristiques temporelles du traitement des fréquences spatiales en reconnaissance d’objets ont été étudiées auprès d’observateurs adultes normaux. Les cibles étaient des images d’objets familiers filtrées spatialement (fréquences centrales de 1,2 cycles par degré (cpd); 2,4 cpd; 4,8 cpd; et 9,6 cpd) présentées pendant 200 ms. La visibilité de la cible variait à travers le temps en fonction d'une fonction d'échantillonnage aléatoire affectant le rapport signal/bruit (le signal étant l'image cible; le bruit étant un champ de bruit blanc superposé). La tâche en était une d’appariements avec délai et choix forcé de la cible parmi quatre alternatives non filtrées (4AFC). Les résultats montrent que le traitement visuel était initialement dominé par la bande de 4,8 cpd, suivie brièvement par celle de 9,6 cpd, puis 1,2 cpd et enfin 2,4 cpd. Les résultats montrent que le contenu fréquentiel des oscillations du stimulus (i.e. les variations temporelles du rapport signal sur bruit) interagit à la fois avec le temps et la bande de fréquences spatiales des stimuli, montrant ainsi que le simple passage du temps n'est pas le seul déterminant du traitement des fréquences spatiales en reconnaissance visuelle. Un algorithme d'apprentissage automatique exposé aux patterns de données des participants individuels (avec validation croisé un-contre-tous) les a classés avec succès en fonction de leur condition de fréquence spatiale avec une précision de 90.6 % en utilisant seulement 8.1 % des attributs disponibles. Les résultats remettent en question l'hypothèse du traitement visuel de grossier à fin (i.e. « coarse-to-fine »).
