Abstract
Édouard Le Roy (1870–1954) made an important contribution to philosophical debates at the start of the twentieth century on evolution and the position of the human species within nature. Yet his work has been overlooked, notably his role in the development of the concept of the noosphere. This article examines the context of Le Roy’s work, analyses the metaphysics and ontology set out in his two books L’Exigence idéaliste et le fait de l’évolution (1927) and Les origines humaines et l’évolution de l’intelligence (1928). It explores the issue of anthropomorphism and the relevance of his ideas to contemporary debates on planetary ecology and the concept of the Anthropocene, noting that Le Roy’s decision to place the biosphere at the heart of his ontology ultimately means his philosophy can be regarded as a steppingstone towards a philosophy of Earth.
