Ce mémoire de maîtrise se penche sur la figure de Jacques Rousseau (1905-1970), un chercheur prolifique dont la longue carrière transdisciplinaire l'a mené de la botanique à l’ethnohistoire. Bien qu’il ait été, de son vivant, une personnalité publique et un scientifique de renom, son œuvre autochtoniste est en grande partie tombée dans l'oubli historiographique. Cette recherche vise ainsi à questionner sa place dans la généalogie de l’ethnohistoire et à analyser la nature singulière de son travail. Le parcours de Rousseau, qu'il soit institutionnel ou personnel, a été déterminant dans l'évolution de ses recherches. De son rôle de bras droit du frère Marie-Victorin, au Laboratoire et au Jardin botanique de Montréal, à ses postes prestigieux de professeur invité à la Sorbonne et de chercheur au Centre d’études nordiques de l’Université Laval, ses nombreuses explorations dans le Nord-du-Québec ont agi comme un véritable moteur de sa production intellectuelle. C’est à travers ses contacts directs et répétés avec les peuples autochtones — notamment ses guides innus, mais aussi les Naskapis et les Abénaquis — que son intérêt pour leurs modes de vie, leurs histoires et leurs cultures a progressivement évolué. La thèse centrale de ce mémoire est que l’œuvre de Jacques Rousseau mérite une réévaluation. Elle constitue une approche de l'ethnohistoire tout à fait singulière, ancrée dans une démarche pragmatique et un engagement sur le terrain. L’étude de son travail d’intellectuel polymathe permettra de décortiquer la manière dont il a su mobiliser sa notoriété pour rendre l’histoire autochtone plus accessible au grand public. Elle mettra également en lumière la profonde évolution de sa pensée, qui est passée d'une vision initiale d'intégration coloniale à une critique explicite des politiques du colonialisme interne de son époque.
