Abstract
While there is a growing body of research on unpaid caregivers of individuals with mental or substance use disorders, it is not clear if there is existing research on unpaid caregivers who support individuals with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders (or CD, concurrent disorders). It is presumed that unpaid caregivers who support those with CD are in complex, challenging situations. CD as a broad topic of study is said to be currently under-researched and underfunded in Canada. More attention is required to better understand the experiences of unpaid caregivers who support individuals with CD and how it is related to their well-being. The recognition and support of these caregivers is paramount. Research on this topic can support the development of appropriate policies and programs for this group of 'invisible' caregivers. As such, a scoping review to understand what is known about unpaid caregivers of individuals with CD is required.
