Abstract
Abstract In my recital programme “Fantasy Vignettes,” I map the evolution of over 400 years of the violin fantasy in a series of four tableaus or vignettes. For each vignette in this presentation, I provide a complementary visual element through costumes that I have designed and created. The journey begins in the first vignette on the baroque violin with the earliest notated violin fantasia by Étienne Nau which is a rare transcription of a performance that would have been improvised by the violinist-composer. I present fantasias in the same vein by Nicola Matteis Jr. and Georg Philipp Telemann wearing a reconfiguration of baroque-inspired garments that mirror the patching together of preconfigured schemata in improvisation. I set the stage here by drawing attention to the close relationship between fantasy, improvisation and performance in the dual roles of violinist-composer. In the second vignette, I frame Robert Schumann’s violin fantasy in the context of his literary characters Florestan and Eusebius which represent the feminine and masculine aspects of identity. I portray this split personality by wearing an outfit that is half tailcoat and trousers similar to what Robert would have worn, and half gown such his wife and accomplished pianist and composer, Clara Schumann might have donned. I intend for this to continue to call into question the construct of masculinity and femininity as it pertains to clothing and physical presentation. I attribute additional meaning to the depiction of multiplicity of personalities because of my identity as both a modern and baroque violinist. The third Vignette is constructed by placing Fantasies by Florence Price and Arnold Schoenberg side by side. Here, I explore the theme of freedom both in a compositional and socio-political sense. To represent the 12-tone hexachordal structure of Schoenberg’s piece, I have combined 12 colour tones of sheer fabric into 144 differently-coloured patchwork hexagons in repeating rows. Motifs of emancipation permeate the works of both composers, and I have used the patchwork structure to draw attention to the ways that humans strive to piece together meanings and liberate their existences as they explore their roots and traditions. I conclude the recital with a collaborative original work by Canadian composer Mari Alice Conrad. This work is a reflection and commentary on the programme as a whole and incorporates sewing machines and accessories as instruments. For this new work, I have created a simple needle costume to represent the thread that stitches the programme together and the merger in my artistic life of the identities of musician, composer, designer and improviser.
