Abstract
• This article explores, from a spatial perspective, what the globalization of the economy means for Europe. • Today Europe is a continent of tertiary countries, but the settlement system corresponds to a productive structure. • Globalization in Europe has generated a process with negative consequences for rural areas and small and medium-sized cities. • The positive effects of globalization are concentrated in the large metropolitan areas of each country. • Anti-Globalization discourse in losing areas boosts political support for extremist and populist forces.
