Abstract
Updated synthesis of Nearctic Mantodea, presenting revised key to all established genera in the U.S. and Canada and incorporating major recent taxonomic treatments. New distributional data include: first documentation of Iris oratoria in Mexico, continued spread of Miomantis caffra in California and widespread continental expansion of Mantis religiosa into Canada and Mexico. Updated Stagmomantis treatments record multiple new localities and confirm established Stagmomantis montana population in Florida. The rapid expansion of Statilia maculata is documented, along with newly detected U.S. occurrences of Hierodula, Rivetina, Sphodromantis and additional non-native Stagmomantis and Tenodera species. Discussion of heterospecific mate attraction summarizes recent field observations that demonstrate cross-species mounting and attempted copulation events within Mantidae.
