Abstract
Mineable Zn deposits consist of two types: Zn sulphide deposits, which contain minerals such as sphalerite (ZnS), and oxide Zn deposits, which contain minerals such as: willemite, hemimorphite, sauconite, zincite, zinc hydroxide, hydrozincite, and smithsonite. Since 1959 several regional stream sediment surveys in the Antigonish Highlands have been undertaken by the Geological Survey of Canada, Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, and private mining companies. These surveys have recognized the presence of anomalous Zn concentrations near Kirkmount, Eigg Mountain, and Georgeville. At these locations drilling has revealed the oxide zinc mineralization in the form of willemite (Zn₂SiO₄) thought to be related to large regional-scale faults. In addition to these three locations, a fourth much larger area, the entire West Barneys River drainage basin, returned anomalous Zn concentrations. A high density stream sediment survey of the West Barneys River drainage basin was carried out in May and June 2003. Aqua regia digestion of the -80 mesh fraction of the samples confirmed the presence of the Zn anomaly, with concentrations between 70 and 768 ppm. Partial digestions to determine the mode of dispersion and speciation of the anomalous Zn revealed that Zn is primarily adsorbed onto Fe-oxides in the stream sediments. Further interpretation of the geochemical data indicates that the highest concentrations of Zn, Fe, Cu, Pb, and Mo are located around the perimeter of a Devono-Carboniferous granitic pluton in the drainage basin. This spatial distribution suggests that the anomalous Zn concentrations may be related to skarn mineralization adjacent to the intrusion, and not to an oxide Zn deposit.
