Comparative rates of dehydration and rehydration of anuran species indigenous to Nova Scotia as they pertain to sex, species and size of the specimen

Abstract
Upon metamorphosis, most anurans develop functional lungs to replace the gills of the larval stage but also maintain an ability to perform gas-exchange across their integument. This increased permeability of anuran skin is advantageous in aquatic environments but threatens the animals with dehydration when in terrestrial environments. Different species of anurans have various preferred habitats and there has been some dispute as to whether the degree of permeability of their skin varies interspecifically or simply by size of the animal. The purpose of this study was to examine the rates of dehydration and rehydration of four different species of anurans indigenous to Nova Scotia; Bufo americanus, Rana catesbeiana, Rana pipiens and Rana clamitans taking into account their species, size and sex. Individual frogs were placed in a desiccating vessel where both the temperature and the relative humidity were monitored. The animals were weighed at regular intervals for a set time at which point water was introduced to the vessels and their rehydration was monitored in the same manner. Upon analysis it was found that species and surface area to volume ratio were significant factors in rate of rehydration. Sex was not found to be a significant factor in rates of either dehydration or rehydration although the relationship between rates of dehydration and sex varied among species. Although contrasting with some of the previous hypotheses regarding the relationship between water metabolism of amphibians and their degree of terrestriality, the present study found literary support for most of its conclusions and could perhaps aid in resolution to the dispute surrounding this topic as well as contribute to greater understanding of the water economy of Nova Scotian anurans.
