The effects of flooding regime and subzero temperatures on the rare Atlantic Coastal Plain species, Hydrocotyle umbellata

Hydrocotyle umbellata is a semi-aquatic endangered species that lives on two lakes in all of Canada: Wilson's Lake, Yarmouth County and Kejimkujik Lake, Kejimkujik National Park. Though climate change, the construction of dams, and land use changes, the hydrological regime on lakes in Nova Scotia are changing. In this study, I examined the effects of flooding regime on growth and development of Hydrocotyle umbellata. Treatments included a "dry" summer condition where plants were not flooded at all, two constantly flooded treatments at two different depths, and three short term flood treatments (one early summer, one midsummer, and one late summer). Plants grew best under the "dry" summer condition; depth of flooding had little effect, and short term floods were just as damaging as continuous flooding. Timing of the short term floods had little impact. The flooded plants allocated more resources to the production of petioles at the expense of reproduction. Unit leaf rate initially declined with flooding, but increased over time as plants acclimated to the flooded condition. I also studied freezing tolerance in the underground structures of Hydrocotyle umbellata (rhizome). The LT₅₀ for a 6 cm rhizome fragment was determined to be in the range of -5 to -7 °C.
