Comparison of growth rate and body condition of juvenile Salmonidae in acidified rivers of the Southern Upland Region, Nova Scotia

Abstract
We explored the direct and indirect effects of low pH on juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Speckled trout (Salvelinus Jrontinalis) in three Nova Scotia rivers. Water chemistry, dissolved oxygen, and water temperature data were collected at set intervals throughout the study period. Weight, length and age data were collected from juvenile Salmonids in each watershed (rivers and tributaries) to determine the growth rate and condition of each population of fish. Low pH was not found to negatively impact growth of Salmonids but potentially limits salmon population densities by increasing mortality at early life stages. Benthic macro invertebrates seem to be negatively impacted by low pH, indicated by reduced overall abundances and order richness. Invertebrates are not currently limiting salmon recovery on the West River but may become so unless low abundances are reversed. The West River should experience higher densities of juvenile salmon with the installation of a Lime Doser that increases river pH. The increase in pH may help lead to salmon recovery by decreasing mortality of early life stages.
