Cet article présente les résultats d’une recherche doctorale qui examine le développement de la compétence métalangagière de six étudiantes en formation initiale à l’enseignement considérées comme en difficulté. L’objectif est d’analyser les retombées d’une démarche didactique qui vise l’apprentissage de deux stratégies d’amplification syntaxique, soit le rehaussement (mobilisant le complément du nom) et l’accroissement (mobilisant le complément de phrase), sur leur capacité à produire des textes argumentatifs cohérents.La méthodologie repose sur une étude multicas. La démarche didactique, qui s’inscrivait dans les principes de l’enseignement explicite, s’est étalée sur cinq séances universitaires. Les données collectées comprennent deux rédactions et deux entretiens métascripturaux analysés selon des indicateurs de compétence métalangagière à six niveaux développés pour la recherche.Les résultats révèlent des progressions différenciées : cinq participantes sur six ont progressé d’au moins un niveau pour le rehaussement, tandis que quatre sur six ont progressé pour l’accroissement. Les gains les plus notables concernent la compréhension de la modalisation et son rôle dans l’argumentation. Cependant, ces progrès demeurent modestes et dépendants d’un étayage important. Les participantes peinent encore à identifier spontanément les structures syntaxiques et à expliciter leur contribution à la cohérence textuelle, particulièrement pour la problématisation.Globalement, l’étude souligne la complexité du développement de la compétence métalangagière et insiste sur l’importance d’un enseignement plus soutenu pour amener les futurs enseignants à maitriser efficacement l’écriture argumentative.
