Cet article réexamine la « Figure du Port Royal » , une chorographie que Marc Lescarbot annexe aux cinq éditions de son Histoire de la Nouvelle-France (1609, 1611-12, 1617-18), en confrontant le récit historique par le prisme de la fiction littéraire. Loin de ne constituer qu’une représentation fantaisiste, comme l’a parfois suggéré la critique, cette gravure synthétise au contraire la vision projective que Lescarbot préfigure pour implanter outre-Atlantique une colonie française pérenne au début du xvii e siècle. Les saynètes qui composent le tableau reflètent sa pensée qui se manifeste de façon plus fragmentée dans ses différentes chroniques américaines. Dès lors, le croisement entre le récit et l’iconographie offre une clé de lecture pour saisir deux aspects importants : d’une part, la vision de l’auteur sur la colonisation et, d’autre part, la façon dont il conçoit l’écriture de l’histoire. Dans le cadre d’une étude portant sur les dynamiques du mouvement, il semble pertinent de souligner que la mobilité peut paradoxalement se cristalliser dans la scénographie figée d’une mise en images. Le déplacement sera donc ici envisagé sous un angle symbolique, afin d’examiner la valeur du discours anticipatif, mais également de manière plus littérale pour analyser le sens des variations graphiques entre les rééditions.
