Abstract
Au siècle des Lumières, la Franc-maçonnerie s’affiche cosmopolite. Elle se développe particulièrement dans les grands ports, notamment en Méditerranée où elle se diffuse dans l’ensemble du bassin. Alors qu’en quête de reconnaissance par les élites comme par les pouvoirs, elle s’affirme de plus en plus chrétienne, pratiquant des hauts-grades d’essence chevaleresque qui font souvent référence aux croisades et à l’héritage des croisés, elle est confrontée au souhait de visiteurs venus des Échelles du Levant, des régences barbaresques et du Maron d’être admis le temps d’un bref séjour ou pour une affiliation de plus longue durée. Les réactions sont contrastées et le poids des stéréotypes et des préjugés variable. L’évolution vers une plus grande tolérance n’est pas linéaire et les préjugés persistent surtout dans les régions où la menace des corsaires barbaresques demeure réelle.
