A Wide-Band Dual-Reflectarray Antenna for Satellite Communications

Abstract
This work presents a wide-band, Cassegrain-style, dual-reflectarray antenna for use in satellite communications, while addressing the bandwidth challenges associated with large subreflector sizes. The reflectarray itself is dual circularly-polarized and operates over both Ku-band downlink (10.7-12.75 GHz) and uplink ($13.75-14.5 \text{GHz}$) frequency ranges, presenting a simulated peak gain of 29.6 dBi with a$1.5-\text{dB}$gain bandwidth of 32.3% using an ideal Gaussian feed model. The aim of this design is four-fold: 1) provide a compact, planar, antenna that is simple to deploy, 2) sustain a large gain suitable for high data-rate communications, 3) occupy a wide bandwidth such that both transmit and receive can be accomplished with the same antenna, and 4) provide an isotropic response that allows for both left-and right-hand circular polarizations.
