Abstract
The physical setting of Baffin Bay, the northern Labrador Sea, and the surrounding land plays an important part in the character of the Quaternary glacial and climatic events that are the focus of this book. This chapter has three broad topics: first is a discussion of the bedrock geology of the region and the Cenozoic/Tertiary tectonic evolution which led to the present configuration of land and ocean; second is a brief statement about Cenozoic climates and the timing of glaciation for the region; and third is a discussion and illustration of the present environmental setting, including sections on: glaciology, oceanography, climatology, sea ice, and biogeography.
