Blanding's turtle conservation in Nova Scotia : linking science stewardship through public education

Abstract
The Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) in Nova Scotia, which occurs in a complex of three distinguishable populations, is nationally and provincially endangered. One of the three populations occurs in a working landscape in and around Pleasant River. My focus was to help conserve this population through science, public education, and stewardship. From May 2002 to December 2005 trapping, radio-telemetry, and visual surveys yielded 124 Blanding's turtles (39 males, 35 females, 50 juveniles) in seven primary areas. Females nested in a widely distributed variety of mostly artificial habitats and substrates. Nesting appeared to be synchronized within areas, but variable among areas and years. Hatching success was low (34%) but variable among nests and years. Turtles showed fidelity to winter aggregation sites that had unique oxygen, temperature, and habitat profiles. Planned and spontaneous public education was used to spread awareness locally, which in tum generated stewardship actions from the public. Overall, intensive research over the past four years in Pleasant River resulted in the convergence of science and stewardship, which was facilitated by effective public education and outreach.
