Abstract
Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób Jean-Charles Serra – rezydent francuski w Warszawie w latach 1808–1811 – oceniał sytuację finansową Księstwa Warszawskiego w 1808 r. oraz jak próbował na nią wpływać. Podstawą analizy uczyniono przede wszystkim jego korespondencję urzędową z tego okresu. Materiał źródłowy został skonfrontowany z dotychczasową literaturą przedmiotu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem badań nad funkcjonowaniem administracji Księstwa Warszawskiego oraz relacjami francusko-polskimi. W badaniu zastosowano metodę krytycznej analizy źródeł, z akcentem położonym na język dokumentów oraz powtarzające się wzory oceny i postulaty rezydenta. Podczas analizy źródeł udało się ustalić, że Serra nie tylko relacjonował problemy finansowe Księstwa, ale aktywnie zabiegał o ich rozwiązanie zgodne z interesem napoleońskiej Francji, traktując kwestie finansowe jako element szerszego porządku politycznego. W swoich raportach krytykował nieudolną w jego ocenie politykę rządu warszawskiego, aparat urzędniczy oraz ministrów, wskazywał na nadużycia i brak nadzoru. Artykuł dowodzi, że Serra traktował swoją misję nie jako bierne pośrednictwo, lecz jako formę nadzoru i interwencji, dążąc do podporządkowania polityki skarbowej Księstwa Warszawskiego celom Napoleona.
