Abstract

This study investigates sleep-stage–dependent fMRI dynamics, with a focus on BOLD-CSF coupling, in healthy people and people with central disorders of hypersomnolence (narcolepsy type 1, type 2, and idiopathic hypersomnia). We aim (1) to examine how sleep stages are associated with changes in BOLD-CSF coupling and (2) to compare groups to identify potential sleep-related neural biomarkers. Data come from 97 participants across two sites (Montréal and Amsterdam) who underwent a 30-minute concurrent EEG-fMRI nap, along with questionnaires, cognitive testing, and clinical assessments. The primary outcome measure is BOLD-CSF coupling, with additional fMRI- and EEG-derived variables considered in secondary or exploratory analyses (see Variables and Analysis Plan).
